Learn how to make your own lotion and enjoy the benefits of natural, personalised skincare.
Making a lotion or a body cream can be quite a complicated process, and in some cases may require expensive equipment and ingredients. However, we are going to make it easy for you to make your very own lotion using a cream base! All you need are 4 ingredients and a variety of equipment that you most likely already have in your kitchen.
SUPPLIES YOU WILL NEED
For the sake of this recipe, we will be giving you measurements for 1kg of lotion, however we will also include the percentages so that you are able to scale and customise the formula as you see fit.
1kg of Lotion:
- 847g Deionised/Distilled Water
- 50g Glycerine
- 100g Cream Base
- 3g Fragrance Oil
Formulation:
- 84.7% Deionised/Distilled Water
- 5% Glycerine
- 10% Cream Base
- 0.3% Fragrance Oil
If you want to customise the formula by adding other ingredients for specific benefits, just remember that whatever percentage of another ingredient you add, you have to subtract that from the water. Your formula should always add up to 100% - whatever you add, you can just fill the balance with water until you get to 100%.
The Equipment:
- Spatula
- Thermometer
- Scale
- 2x Stove hot plates
- 2x 1L glass jugs
- 2x 1L stainless steel bowls
- A Handheld stick blender
- Packaging of your choice (preferably a bottle with a lotion pump)
DIRECTIONS
- Step 1: Heat your water in one of the glass jugs to 85˚C
- Step 2: Heat the cream base using a double boiling technique until fully melted
- Step 3: Add your glycerine and any other ingredients you would like to add to the boiled water.
- Step 4: Add the melted cream base to the water mixture and PULSE with a handheld stick blender for 5 minutes, and stir for a further 5 minutes.
- Step 5: Let the mixture cool down a bit, and add in your fragrance oil once it is below 45˚C
- Step 6: While your mixture is still warm, pour it into your packaging of choice. Let it cool down completely without any lids or closures. The mixture will thicken to a lotion consistency, and once it is cooled completely, it will be ready to use!
