If you’re new to cosmetic formulation, Cetyl Alcohol and Cetearyl Alcohol are exactly the kind of ingredients that make you stop and think:
“Wait… aren’t those basically the same thing?”
Not quite.
They’re closely related and perform many similar jobs, but the difference between them can have a noticeable effect on the texture, thickness and feel of your finished product.
And before we get into it: these aren’t the drying alcohols you might associate with toners and sanitisers. They’re fatty alcohols, commonly used in cosmetic formulations to improve texture, viscosity, stability and skin feel.
Cetyl Alcohol: The Silky One
Cetyl Alcohol, also known as Palmityl Alcohol, is a C16 fatty alcohol. In cosmetic formulations, it works as a co-emulsifier, thickener, emollient, viscosity builder and texture enhancer.
Its speciality? Creating products that feel lighter, smoother and silkier.
Cetyl Alcohol can improve slip and spreadability, reduce a greasy after-feel and add body without necessarily turning your formulation into a very heavy cream.

Typical usage is around 1–5%. Lower levels of 1–2% suit lighter lotions, while 3–5% can create thicker creams.
Think of Cetyl Alcohol as the ingredient you reach for when you want a little more body, but still want that “Ooh, that feels silky” finish.
Cetearyl Alcohol: The Bodybuilder
Cetearyl Alcohol, sometimes called Ceto Stearyl Alcohol, is actually a blend of Cetyl Alcohol (C16) and Stearyl Alcohol (C18).
It performs many of the same functions as Cetyl Alcohol, but brings more thickness, body and structure to a formulation.
Cetearyl Alcohol can help create rich, luxurious creams, improve viscosity, support emulsion stability and help prevent phase separation.

Typical usage is 2–8%, with 2–4% suited to lotions and 5–8% used for richer creams and barrier products.
If Cetyl Alcohol is silky and lightweight, Cetearyl Alcohol is its slightly more muscular cousin.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Here’s the easiest way to remember it:
Cetyl Alcohol = lighter, silkier and moderate thickening.
Choose it for lightweight lotions, fast-absorbing creams, improved slip and a smoother skin feel.
Cetearyl Alcohol = richer, thicker and more structured.
Choose it when you want higher viscosity, greater body, improved emulsion stability or a richer, more substantial cream.
Neither one is automatically better — it depends on the product you’re trying to create.
How Are They Used in a Formulation?
Both ingredients are oil-soluble and are normally added to the oil phase along with your oils, butters and waxes.
They should be completely melted before emulsification, with a typical processing temperature of around 70–75°C.
One important thing to remember: they are generally co-emulsifiers, not your primary emulsifier.
They usually need to be used alongside a suitable primary emulsifier, such as Ceteareth-20, depending on your formulation.
In other words, adding some Cetyl Alcohol to oil and water and hoping for the best isn't quite an emulsification system.
Nice try, though.
Can You Use Them Together?
Yes!
Formulations can use Cetyl Alcohol and Cetearyl Alcohol together. Used appropriately alongside a suitable primary emulsifier, fatty alcohols can help improve viscosity, stability, texture, spreadability and overall skin feel.
Just remember: more isn’t always better.
Using too much of either ingredient can make a formulation feel overly thick or waxy and may reduce spreadability. The goal is to find the right balance for the texture you want.
